BANGKOK
Thailand’s capital is south-east Asia’s most enigmatic city, a head-on clash between tradition and modernity. First-time visitors may be a little taken aback by the concrete canyons and futuristic, billboard-covered skyscrapers, but take a few steps away from the main roads into one of the city’s countless alleys and traditional Thai culture is everywhere – an urban cornucopia of smells, tastes, sounds and sights that one is unlikely to forget.
Bangkok gets the balance right between the expensive, the esoteric and the profane. The squeaky-clean sky train and underground system make most of this huge metropolis navigable, whisking visitors from their luxury accommodation to a sparkling Buddhist temple or an ancient amulet market within minutes – a kind of time travel possible in few other cities of 11 million people.
River trips, museums, shopping centers and, of course, Bangkok’s nightlife (which has come a long way from gaudy to cosmopolitan) make for the defining Far Eastern urban experience. While Thailand has been ruled by a repressive military regime since 2014 and law and order tend to be rather selectively enforced, Bangkok remains one of the world’s safest cities; violent crime against foreign visitors remains relatively rare. Still, visitors should keep away from demonstrations that can turn violent and be wary of the police.
PHUKET
Phuket, the Pearl of the Andaman, is Thailand’s largest island, with a curvaceous coastline of wide sugary beaches strung between jutting peninsulas and craggy rock formations.
Though it has long been one of Thailand’s most popular destinations, it is easy to avoid the tourist traps. Venture into Phuket Old Town, a former South-east Asia tin trading hub and the island’s cultural centre. Its Sino-Portuguese architecture is currently being restored and spruced up - the droopy webs of telephone wires are being moved underground and designers, artists and baristas are making themselves at home amid the traditional shop-houses, temples and barbers that line the streets.
When it comes to natural attractions, Phuket has a fair bounty – pearly beaches, dramatic coastlines, monolithic limestone karsts, never mind the national parks teeming with marine life and rainforest habitat – but cultural diversions have always been a bit harder to find. That doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Peel yourself off the sunbed for a stroll around the mosaic-tiled streets of Phuket Old Town and light some incense at a colorful tiered temple. (But don’t forget to cover up).
The island of Phuket has 29 Buddhist temples sprinkled throughout, but Wat Chalong (or formally Wat Chaithararam), with its three dozen carved Buddhas, stone serpent banisters and lotus ponds, and is the gold-topped temple to see.

Budapest
People from all over the world visit Budapest to experience the city’s rich history, natural sites, and unique cuisine. There are plenty of bathhouses, a famous hallmark of Budapest, which still operate today and allow you to soak in mineral water that’s coming straight from the over 100 thermal springs surrounding the city. The architectural beauty of Budapest has gained it the nickname “The Paris of the East,” for its Roman ruins, contemporary postmodern designs, and an array of major works commissioned in 1896 to mark the millennium since the arrival of the Magyars in Hungary. And still, a modern nightlife scene attracts a younger crowd. Budapest travel offers something for everyone.
Budapest is a dual city, made up of the twin cities Buda, on the West side of the river Danube and Pest on the East. The cities became one in 1873. Buda is considered the more sedate and Pest the livelier of the city’s halves, though these distinctions are now largely a matter of tradition. Travel to Budapest and enjoy both amazing sides. Hungarian is a difficult language to speak, but it’s possible to make your way around Budapest with English or sometimes French. Our Budapest travel guide will help you get around, too.
Vienna
Vienna is a city that charms and seduces from scratch but deepens the longer you stay. Whether you're visiting for fast-track travel or slow-paced sightseeing, and regardless of how many times you've been before, there's a seemingly never-ending wealth of things to do and see throughout the year. Consistently ranked as offering the highest quality of life in the world, Vienna entices locals and visitors alike with splendid attractions, world-class events, excellent public transport, a modern city bike scheme, fabulous eateries, cafés, bars and wineries, shops and street markets.
The cold weather between December and March shouldn't be a damper. There are plenty of places to warm up. What's more, with street markets aglow and the ball season in full swing it's a fun time to visit. By April milder temperatures and blooming parks and gardens get locals back outdoors. From mid-May to late June, outdoor festivals and parties are well underway and reach their peak with the annual three-day Donauinselfest – Europe's largest free open-air party. Although the odd heat-wave may feel uncomfortable during July and August, cool-down, chill-out locations are in abundance along the Danube River and canal, though state-run opera, concert and theatre venues close shop. From September onwards, cultural activities are back in full swing, and mild, sunny days offer ideal conditions for exploring the surrounding countryside.

Havana
Cuba’s capital city, Havana, is one of the world’s most exciting cities to visit. Well, at least that is what we at Havana Adventures think anyway. Its uniqueness inspires the imagination, and it’s rich and colorful history fascinates. After more than half a century of relative isolation, Havana is fast becoming more accessible. Right now, could perhaps be the best time ever to experience the wonders of Cuba’s capital. The ways of life of the residents under the socialist revolution are still very much in evidence, and the culture of the Cubans that has intensified in isolation, insulated from the rest of the world, is for the moment largely preserved, while at the same time, for the first time in more than 50 years, services for visitors to Havana have reached levels of comfort that are acceptable for even travelers on the fussier end of the spectrum. It’s an adventurous destination, seemingly on the verge of massive change.
Havana is divided into several distinct zones. Understanding these is an important start to discovering the city and uncovering its mysteries. The zones that are of most interest to the visitor are:
Old Havana - the colonial core
Vedado - the newer center of business and commerce, since the early 1900’s, and residence for some of the wealthier Cubans
Central Havana - the area in between these two that is also framed to the north by the Atlantic Ocean.
Varadero
Varadero, located on the sinuous 20km-long Hicacos Peninsula, stands at the vanguard of Cuba’s most important industry – tourism. As the largest resort in the Caribbean, it guards a huge, unsubtle and constantly evolving stash of hotels (over 60), shops, water activities and poolside entertainment; though its trump card is its beach, an uninterrupted 20km stretch of blond sand that is undoubtedly one of the Caribbean's best. But, while this large, tourist-friendly mega-resort may be essential to the Cuban economy, it offers little in the way of unique Cuban experiences.
Most Varadero tourists buy their vacation packages overseas and are content to idle for a week or two enjoying the all-inclusiveness of their resort. However, if you’re touring Cuba independently, and want to swap your backcountry rambling for some stress-free beach life, Varadero can provide a few nights of well-earned sloth after a dusty spell on the road.

Moscow
Go to Moscow to visit such well-known sights as Red Square, the Kremlin, and Lenin’s tomb. But also, to experience the 24-hour buzz of one of Europe’s most vibrant cities – a sprawling metropolis of more than 10 million people, packed with nightclubs, bars and shopping centers.
And culture, too. From the stunning large-scale canvases of old masters such as Ilya Repin to priceless religious icons, the Tretyakov Gallery is the place to draw breath after a day in the Russian capital.
In the evening, dress up for a visit to the opera or the ballet. If you have any time left, stroll on the Old Arbat, Moscow’s main tourist stretch that was once home to some of Russia’s finest writers and composers.
Once one of the world’s most expensive cities for tourists and business travelers, the collapse of the ruble means Moscow is suddenly a lot more affordable.
Saint Petersburg
The creation of westward-looking Peter the Great, St Petersburg was intended from its inception as a display of imperial Russia’s growing status in the world. Fine-tuned by Peter’s successors, who employed a host of European architects to add fabulous palaces and cathedrals to the city’s layout, St Petersburg grew to be the Romanovs’ showcase capital and Russia’s first great, modern city. The capital may have moved back to Moscow following the revolution, but despite all that history has thrown at it, St Petersburg still feels every bit the imperial city with its historic heart largely frozen in time.
Venice of the North.
Whether you’re cruising along the elegant canals, crossing one of the 342 bridges in the city, or just watching them being raised in summer over the mighty Neva River at night to allow ships to pass through, you’re never far from water in St Petersburg. This has earned the city unsurprising comparisons to Venice, but the similarities don’t stop there: walking around the historic center will reveal canals lined by Italianate mansions and broken up by striking plazas adorned with baroque and neoclassical palaces. North of the city center there are also pristine beaches fringing the Gulf of Finland.
